Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping
I called and made a reservation with Sandy at Mackinaw Mill Creek campground. When she asked for my name, I replied Tim. She said Tim or Jim. I said Tim as in Tom. From that point on I was referred to as TimTom.
This was our first time camping here at this park and let me tell you that it is a large one. The campground has plenty of trees, 2 playgrounds, an arcade and game room, a small store, mini golf, heated pool and cabins.
The site we got provided us with a front row seat to view both the Mackinaw Bridge and Mackinac Island. It was fantastic. The site was a full hookup with electric, water and sewer. It also had a picnic table. There is Wi-Fi access but you will need to pay a fee to use it. They will allow small campfires but only in the fire rings that you can get at the office or store.
NOTICE: Whatever you do, don’t use the tape they provide with the camp permit. It is almost imposible to remove the goo from your windshield.
One thing we didn’t like was that they operate more like a hotel than a campground. They will not take site specific reservations. That gives them the option to move you wherever they choose. This could be a real deal breaker if you were only going to this park because of a favorite campsite and did not get it upon your arrival. I am not sure that we would personally take this chance in the middle of the busy summer camping season.
Over all this is a real good campground. It was too bad that the bugs were so bad. The local people told us that they have never seen the bugs swarming so badly up here. Between the bugs and the goose droppings everywhere, we didn’t spend much time outside.
Friday we took a ferry over to the island. We like the Arnold line. I discovered that if you purchase your tickets online you can save a couple of bucks. Just let them know the confirmation number you get back when you purchase them and you won’t even need a printer.
The distance around the island is 8 miles, so we rented a couple of bikes and went for a ride around it. The ride is very nice and the views are picturesque.
When we returned to Mackinaw City we stopped into the Keyhole Bar and Grill. This place has some awesome beer batter fried shrimp. We like it so much that we made it a point to stop back for more before leaving town. Another favorite is Murdick’s Fudge. Make sure you stop at the one in Mackinaw City. This is the only one that has direct relations to the original fudge recipe.
